What is a distributed energy system?

Distributed energy systems are an integral part of the sustainable energy transition. DES avoid/minimize transmission and distribution setup, thus saving on cost and losses. DES can be typically classified into three categories: grid connectivity, application-level, and load type.

Where will the battery energy storage project be implemented?

The Project will be implemented at approximately 17 sites, located within or adjacent to existing distribution substations of Eskom, across four provinces of South Africa. The Battery Energy Storage Project (Project) provides a solution to address both challenges.

What is distributed energy system (DG)?

DG is regarded to be a promising solution for addressing the global energy challenges. DG systems or distributed energy systems (DES) offer several advantages over centralized energy systems. DESs are highly supported by the global renewable energy drive as most DESs especially in off-grid applications are renewables-based.

Off-grid renewables-based DESs require energy storage systems. Storage technologies however are still expensive and result in extra investment. A large number of DESs can also adversely affect the stability of the grid. Therefore, it is necessary to address the question related to the quality standards of the equipment and services in DES projects.
