Why did NamPower inaugurate anixas II power station?

NamPower Commissions Anixas II Power Station to Strengthen National Power Supply. NamPower has officially inaugurated the Anixas II Power Station, a new facility aimed at enhancing Namibia’s electricity generation capacity. The power station was formally opened on 5 March 2025 by President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba during a ceremony held in Walvis Bay.

Why is NamPower launching a new power station?

NamPower stated that the new facility aims to provide reliable and dispatchable electricity to the national grid, supporting the country’s energy needs and improving security of supply. The station is also expected to assist in managing the variability of renewable energy sources by providing backup generation when needed.

Does Namibia have a centralized power system?

Namibia is evolving from a centralized model dominated by one large utility, NamPower, to a hybrid decentralized model with multiple actors generating and supplying electricity. This represents a significant shift in the generating mix.

Who can develop small power generation facilities in Namibia?

Parties interested in developing small power generation facilities may also look to some of Namibia’s Regional Energy Distributors (REDs). Some REDs are looking to develop their own – albeit limited – generation capacity. Partnering with a RED familiar with the ECB’s IPP framework might result in faster project implementation.
