What are crystalline silicon solar cells?

Crystalline silicon solar cells refer to photovoltaic cells made from silicon, which can be categorized into multicrystalline, monocrystalline, and ribbon silicon types. They are dominant in the solar energy market due to their abundance, nontoxicity, long-term stability, high energy conversion efficiency, and potential for cost reductions.

Why is monocrystalline silicon used in photovoltaic cells?

Monocrystalline silicon consists of silicon in which the crystal lattice of the entire solid is continuous. This crystalline structure does not break at its edges and is free of any grain boundaries.

This means that the internal structure is highly ordered and it is easy for electrons to move through it. The silicon crystals are produced by slowly drawing a rod upwards out of a pool of molten silicon.
