What is glass cullet?

This material allows existing glass products to be melted down and reformed indefinitely, creating a closed-loop solution for the container industry. Integrating cullet into the production process is a standard practice that improves the sustainability and efficiency of glass manufacturing operations worldwide.

What is a cullet & how does it work?

Cullets are recycled glass pieces that are added to the batches of ingredients while manufacturing glass. This is done to reduce energy consumption, as it requires less heat to melt the cullet than it does to melt just silica sand, calcium oxide, soda and magnesium—the main components in glass production.

How can cullet be used in float glass production?

One approach to accomplishing these objectives is to maximize the use of cullet – broken or rejected glass – in the float glass production. The use of 1 ton of cullet saves approximately 1.2 tons of virgin raw materials such as sand, dolomite, soda ash and limestone. Using cullet also reduces process-related emissions.
