Do DC-link capacitors increase inverter power?

DC-link capacitors can significantly contribute to this target by reducing parasitic losses and increasing thermal efficiency. High inverter powers can be theoretically achieved with multiple capacitor connections. However, a high number of parallel-connected parts also increase the complexity of the system stability.

What is a 48 V intermediate bus converter?

Driven by AI and the associated high power requirements, datacenters are transitioning to 48 V intermediate bus converters, which require a complex power conversion process. For high power GPU and AI ASICs in this application, the conversion process starts with the power supply directly from the busbar to the accelerator card or baseboard.

For three-phase inverters at any DC bus voltage, for films and electrolytics, respectively, a rule of thumb is that about 5 and 50 millicoulombs of capacitor nameplate CV rating will be required per amp of ripple current.

Why does a DC link capacitor have a ripple current ICAP?

We may infer from Figure 2 that the DC link capacitor’s AC ripple current Icap arises from two main contributors: (1) the incoming current from the energy source and (2) the current drawn by the inverter. Capacitors cannot pass DC current; thus, DC current only flows from the source to the inverter, bypassing the capacitor.
