What is the future of energy storage in China?

The new energy storage market in China has great development potential in the future. The cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage in China is expected to exceed 100 gigawatts (GW) by 2025, according to the Energy Storage Industry Research White Paper 2025 released by the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics on 10 April.

How big is China's Energy Storage Base?

According to official National Energy Administration data from its recent ‘China new energy storage development report 2025,’ the country’s installed base at the end of 2024 totalled 73.8GW/168GWh. The China Energy Storage Alliance (CNESA) trade group said this represented a 130% year-on-year increase and about 40% of the global total.

How many GW of energy storage are there in 2023?

In 2020, the total installed energy storage capacity was only 35.6 GW, with electrochemical storage accounting for 3.27 GW (CNESA, 2021). By 2023, an additional 21.5 GW of energy storage had been installed, with over 95% of this capacity being lithium battery-based electrochemical storage (CIAPS, 2024).
