What is the difference between a power station and a generator?

Power stations and generators are often mentioned in the same breath, but they occupy very different roles in the energy chain. One is a sprawling industrial system that turns fuel or natural forces into grid power, the other is a specific machine that converts mechanical motion into electricity.

Do substations have generators?

Substations do not (usually) have generators, although a power plant may have a substation nearby. A typical substation will contain line termination structures, high-voltage switchgear, one or more power transformers, low voltage switchgear, surge protection, controls, grounding (earthing) system, and metering.

Why is a generating station called a substation?
