What is grounding for power systems?

This chapter presents the principles and practices of grounding for power systems. An earthed power system usually refers to a system in which the neutral point of transformer or generator windings is intentionally grounded, either solidly or through impedance.

For commercial and industrial systems, the types of power sources generally fall into four broad categories: Utility Service: The system grounding is usually determined by the secondary winding configuration of the upstream utility substation transformer.
