How many power stations are there in Iceland?

We operate fourteen hydropower stations, three geothermal power stations and two wind turbines for research purposes in five operating areas in Iceland. In operating power stations, emphasis is placed on a holistic vision, where prudence, reliability and harmony of the operations with environment and society are the guiding principles.

What energy sources does Iceland use?

Iceland's energy and electricity needs are nearly fully met by renewable energy sources, hydropower and geothermal power, and only 10% of the country's primary energy sources comes from oil ( National Energy Agency, 2021b ).

Does Iceland have geothermal energy?

One of Iceland‘s key energy sources, geothermal energy, provides the country with more than 25% of its total electrical energy supply and nearly all of its heating supply. The country‘s latest installation is the 90 MW Theistareykir geothermal power station in northeast Iceland, which has been in full operation since 2018.
