Can a 12V battery be used in parallel?

It goes without saying (but we’ll say it anyway) that you must not mix voltages or chemistries of batteries. If you run a 12v system, only use 12v batteries. The terminal voltage of each battery should also be almost identical when putting in parallel. A difference of 0.1v is ok in most circumstances.

Should I connect my inverter in parallel?

The big benefit of connecting in parallel is that the voltage to your inverter remains the same while the overall energy capacity. So if you use 2, 5, or 10, 12V batteries the voltage would remain at 12V. This is important as your inverter will be designed for a specific input voltage – usually 12V or 24V.
